[Quyen] Day 26: Bringing Back the Beginning
I suppose part of my English minor is resurfacing. I found myself curious today as to the origins behind these words that get used so seemingly interchangeably in this industry: organic, natural, and so forth.
While looking up the definitions and origins behind the word “organic”, I found myself particularly struck by these definitions and origins that were beyond my general assumptions of its relation to nature:
- Philosophy. having an organization similar in its complexity to that of living things.
- characterized by the systematic arrangement of parts; organized
- of or pertaining to the basic constitution or structure of a thing; constitutional; structural
- Fine Arts. of or pertaining to the shapes or forms in a work of art that are of irregular contour and seem to resemble or suggest forms found in nature
Essentially, that while nature has its basic messiness, it also has its basic structure. The two somehow are able to coexist not as a haphazard mistake but a beautiful display of magnificence.
Regarding the meaning behind “natural”, what struck me most actually were the synonyms: spontaneous, unaffected, genuine, unmannered.
To me these definitions not only place me in a state of awe at the depth and wisdom behind such creations, but somehow remind me be okay with approaching my day to day life in the same way. Not everything has to fit neatly into a certain structure; and even if things do seem to, it’s always good to leave room for exploration and new discoveries.
This 30 Day Organic Challenge has taught me so much in an area that I truly knew nothing about less than a month ago. Not only that, but also perhaps the larger discovery here has been an understanding that organized chaos can really be possible in a meaningful way. That this has levels of meaning that I can apply to my life well beyond the sunset of this challenge.
