[Patricia] Day 9: What’s so essential about essential oils?

Ecopique - Rosemary essential oilI’m not sure if it’s the people I hang out with or the stores I shop at, but I hear the words “essential oils” all the time. Everyone seems to always say positive things about essential oils, but I never understood what they really were. It’s a bird. It’s a plane. It’s …… just kidding. But really, I did some digging and here is what I found.

Essential oils are extracted from plants through steam distillation and cold pressing. The natural scents you smell when you’re hiking in the forest come from a plant’s natural oils. When these oils are extracted they can be used for everything including cooking, beauty and cleaning. Historically, many have used these oils as medical remedies and they were even believed to help cure cancer. Today they are mostly used as substitutes for harsh chemicals in our every day products and also are a big part of aromatherapy treatments. Check out a list of many reasons to use essential oils here. Seems pretty cool that there are so many uses for plant oil. Perhaps that’s how they got the word “essential” tacked on to their household name.

I found this company called Young Living Essential Oils. They have a great guide that helps explain the different types of essential oil categories out there. My interest in essential oils is definitely piqued now. This will just be the beginning of my explorations. I still have 20 more days of the #Organic30day challenge, so keep a look out for my essential oil reviews. Lavender oil bubble bath here I come!
